999123_10152029243792994_2003797878_nQ: Tell us a little bit about yourself…

A: Hi, I’m Amy and I live in the beautiful county of Norfolk, England with my boyfriend and two cats.

I love the simple things in life like a deep sofa, a good book and a large slice of cake. I also love walks along the sea followed up with an ice cream or a mug hot chocolate, depending on the weather.

Q: Tell us about the Silver Linings Project. How did it start?

A: I set up the Silver Linings Project in the summer of 2013 after I hit a spectacularly low point. We had just moved house and my ability to cope with change was, well, non-existent. I was signed off work with anxiety and depression, and soon realised that the problem wasn’t my surroundings, it was the vicious circle that I had put so much time and energy into creating over the past decade. It looked a bit like this: low self esteem = negative thoughts = panic attacks = lack of belief in my ability to cope = low self esteem….

With the patience and support of everyone around me I picked myself up, got back to work, and started talking to a counsellor. At first it was really tough, I was impatient to get better, but a friend told me to concentrate on taking “baby steps”, and little by little I could see I was making progress. I learnt to take each day and each moment at a time, not worrying about yesterday or tomorrow, but enjoying the moment. I started an 8 week mindfulness course (http://amzn.to/1gTK6kT) which taught me how to let thoughts pass by without reacting to them, and I learnt to start thinking more positively and less critically. It turns out I was a perfectionist, albeit with a very messy house!

As part of trying to think more positively, I started the Silver Linings Project, setting up a place to post things that I found online or when I was out and about. I was both encouraged and disheartened to find that there were lots of people in the same boat as me, and it spurred me on to start this blog.

Q: What is the Silver Linings Project blog about?

A: It is about bringing together everything I have learnt, and everything that I am still learning. It is a little corner of the world where I can share my thoughts and ideas with similarly curious people in the hope that we can all help each other enjoy all the little things in life that we already have.

I post about positive things I find each day, about mindfulness, and about my journey through this funny old world. I post as a means of keeping myself on track with positive thinking, as a way of connecting with people, and in the hope that my journey might just help a few other people too.

Q: Can I join in?

A: Yes please! Join in however suits you best. Sign up to this blog, have a browse around and leave comments on anything that strikes a chord. Likewise, have a look at the Facebook page, Twitter feeds and/or Pinterest boards.

Keep an eye out for challenges to join in with, the more the merrier!

Best wishes,

Amy

    1. Thank you! I did revisit it as part of the Zero to Hero WordPress challenge. I felt a bit uncomfortable talking about myself (maybe it’s a British thing?), hence the Q and A. Thank you for the feedback 🙂

  1. Leaving the same message as I did with your guest post over at Everyday Mindfulness:

Same, same, same. Brilliant isn’t it? If someone had told you before you started that you’d be where you are today, I’ll bet you wouldn’t have believed them!

  2. You’re absolutely right, I wouldn’t have believed it in a month of Sundays. I still can’t quite get my head round the fact that battling doesn’t work, the exact opposite of what I thought I should be doing, but I also have plenty of evidence to show it didn’t work!
Now every day is different, in a good way. I am more open to change, heck – I’m even looking for change. I’m so glad you have found it helpful too, and thank you for taking the time to comment 🙂

  3. Hi Amy I’m Maria fron Barcelona and although I don’t know you I feel completely identifyed with you initial situation and the evolution you have lived. I began also with low self esteem and then came the first panic attack. This was the first of many many more and bit by bit I begun to close myself to all that was the outside, meetings, people… fearing I would fall off the ground in social meetings, or that I would tremble and people would freak out about me. So I went for a few sessions to a psycologist who told me I was fine, and That I just had to observe my thoughts and change them. So I went on the internet (google search, “thoughts observe mind”… you know, exhaustive search) and find out 2 names, Matthieu Ricard and Yongey Myngiur Rimpoche. Them books opened up my mind and engaged me with mindfulness meditation practice. I’ve been meditating almost for 3 years and the change in my life has been AWESOME. Now I can have a normal-quite-happy-quite-relaxed life and I can be a “friend” with these thouhts so I suffer less from anxiety (some moments that I easily forget at the end of the day). So I made a blog aprendreameditar.wordpress.com about meditation where I explained all this and where I also offer everybody tools and practices of meditation and mindfulness. I feel very happy and strongly proud to see that there is other people who have suffered like me and that they have overcome this, your case is very important for other people in order to help them and bring them hope. I’m happy to have found your site.

    Hugs!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. I feel strongly about sharing my story so others with similar stories know they’re not alone or “odd”. Can’t wait to read your blog, so glad to have met you! Hugs 🙂
